Producers Notes

The inspiration behind this tribute album was simple. In 1997 Bob Dylan released one of his greatest ever albums, Time Out Of Mind. This merely confirmed his genius and the fact that, after thirty five years, Dylan could still be as vital and relevant as ever. In August 1998 Bob toured Australia, hot on the heels of new found acclaim, a Grammy Award and some of the best reviews for his live shows in years. It was an exciting time to be a Bob fan.
The visit coincided with the annual Radiothon fundraiser for 3RRR - FM in Melbourne. I wanted to organise something special to both celebrate Bob’s visit and to entertain the listeners to Off The Record (the program I present every Saturday morning on the station). It was also a nice way of marking the unofficial tenth anniversary of the program.
I mentioned the idea to Joe Camilleri and he made it happen, opening his studio for seven days recording and mixing, contributing one of the songs, providing encouragement and then finally, coming on to the program to help me present the recordings. Of course, without Joe this would not have been possible. (A big kiss on the forehead for him).
It was amazing fortune that The Casuals - Stephen Hadley, Peter Luscombe and Bruce Haymes, the best rhythm section in the nation - were having a short break from working with Paul Kelly and they stepped in to form what was a fantastic studio band.
The other musicians eagerly volunteered their services and then put in some outstanding performances. It was easy to tell how much affection they had for Bob’s music because song choices were easy, there were few takes and little overdubbing. It is almost as if they had been performing these songs for years waiting for this recording. A huge thanks to them for being involved. You can judge for yourself but I think we have here some of the best renditions of Dylan songs you are ever likely to hear.
The experience of being in a studio for a week is not something that I would recommend but I did learn to make a cafe latte (which I think is my major contribution here) and to keep out of the way. I am in awe of the musicians who really do prove what a magnificent town Melbourne is for music.
In the end we even had contributions from north of the border as Kevin Borich and Blacksmith Hopkins sent in songs that they had recorded in Sydney.
There were many great moments during the recording sessions but one of my favourites came when we were searching for a second song for Stephen Cummings to record and it exemplifies the ability of all the musicians involved. Stephen handed me a book of hundreds of Dylan’s lyrics and asked me to choose a song. “But which one?” I asked. “Any of them. I know them all.” With “It’s All Over Now Baby Blue” promptly requested Dan Luscombe sat at the piano to offer a piano part that he had thought of to go with the song, then on a second take he added his guitar.
Most of the sessions were as simple as that really. Everyone was so familiar with Dylan’s music and had such an affinity and affection for it, that the whole process was remarkably smooth. I think that love of the music comes through on this recording.  I had not originally planned the sessions for an album release but the response since it was first broadcast has been so positive that I decided to share it. So, after numerous requests for an album release, here it is - our tribute to Bob. I hope you enjoy it.
Special thanks to The Casuals - Stephen, Peter and Bruce - for making themselves available so readily and with such enthusiasm and professionalism - and gratis!
Extra special thanks to Joe Camilleri for making it happen and for the coffee and bacon and eggs.
