An Evening of Rhythm & Soul was Celebrated featuring 3 of Offbeat's favourite Artists |

The Offbeat era on Nelson Place was always about Music. We originally wanted to revive the old concept of 'Free entertainment in the Park' by having Live acts on the Rotunda. The mean spirited Council's 'user pays' policy made this impossible and we had no choice but to do it on the street. Many of Australia's Finest Musicians & Bands played live at the store and these truly Wonderful people provided the Street with many of its most memorable moments. |
Our Sincere thanks to you all!

40th Anniversary of the Gurindji strike and land claim "It was considered a waste of money to pay more than bare sustenance to Aborigines, as there was an almost unlimited supply of replacements in the bush"

'from little things big things grow' From overwhelming paternalism and indifference emerged a readiness amongst a significant section of the white community to stand alongside Aborigines in demanding a just reconciliation. |

The Next Generation
Shannon
|
Local guitarist Shannon Carpenter has been voted the Best young busker at this years Apollo Bay Music Festival. The youngster in his first year at Williamstown High School was on hand at the Festival finale when the winners were announced and now plans to put the proceeds of his winning cheque towards a wah-wah pedal. Though already a veteran of many Apollo Bay Festivals, this was his first attempt at busking since taking up the guitar less than a year ago under the guidance of popular local music teacher Alan Brooker.
The electric guitar and amplifier played by Shannon once belonged to the former New Seeker and Virgil Brother Peter Doyle a very dear family friend who passed away in 2001. On hearing of his desire to have a go at playing music, Peter’s wife Jane presented Shannon with the instruments to set him up to play.
Shannon is the
son of local identity Ian Carpenter - who runs the Offbeat Music and rock
memorabilia shop in Nelson Place - and his partner Alison.
This years
festival, the Bay’s 13th was far and away its most successful
with huge crowds lapping up the incredible musical offerings. It really is
a festival with something for everyone, all ages and all tastes are
catered for with gigs ranging from such diverse acts as the ear splitting
Cosmic Psychos under the big top to the Bay community choir in the local
church. Among the many acts to stand out this year were My friend the
chocolate cake, Chris Wilson, Rob Sawyer, the Jaimi Faulkner band, Deborah
Conway, Killing Heidi, Ash Grunwald, The Scared weird little guys,
Collard, Greens & Gravy, The Red hot polka dots, the Borderers and The
Vasco Era who were playing in their home town with Neil Gray from
Spottswood’s True Form Studios at the sound controls. Reproduced from the Western Times 3/5/05 Roll on to 2007 'Daze of Bliss'

Lucy
|
Lucy Scott-Walker worked at Offbeat for about a year, all the while she would dream of one day seeing Van Morrison live in concert somewhere in the World. Well, as fate would have it, Lucy took off to see the World and somewhere along the way her dream of course came true. On her return to Australia, a friend asked her about the highlight of her trip, to which she replied rather excitedly, "there I was 2nd row and there he was, Van the Man, he was there (pointing her finger) he was just there! Well done Luce!

Ian & Finn with Vika & Linda
|
Left to Right: Vika, Ian, Finn & Linda Finn Keane worked at Offbeat for a couple of years, starting as a young fresh out of school kid desperate to get a gig in the music business. 3 years ago he moved on and got a foot in the door of some of Melbourne's recording studios to try his hand at sound engineering. Among the many acts he's worked with are Vika & Linda whose latest album "Love is mighty close" credits Finn in the role of assistant Engineer. |
